Tori Live Iaito Sharp Katana with Crane Hilt and Leather Wrap

Construction and Artistic Koshirae Craftsmanship

This sword is designed with an emphasis on functionality and traditional Japanese aesthetics. The blade is crafted from high-quality steel and is factory sharpened to provide an authentic handling experience. The handle (Tsuka) is covered in genuine black rayskin (Same) and tightly wrapped with a brown leather cord (Tsuka-Ito), ensuring a firm and secure grip even during the most demanding drills.

The decorative elements (Koshirae) carry deep symbolism:

  • Tsuba (Guard): The iron guard is decorated with a delicate flying crane motif, which in Japanese culture symbolises longevity and loyalty.
  • Fuchi and Kashira: The hilt fittings harmoniously complement the crane theme, giving the sword a unified artistic look.
  • Menuki: The ornamental elements under the wrap are inspired by the shape of a samurai helmet (Kabuto).
  • Saya (Scabbard): The wooden scabbard with a brown textured surface is reinforced at the mouth (Koiguchi) with a black lacquered rattan wrap, increasing its durability for frequent drawing practice.

Historical Context and Symbolism

In Japanese culture, the sword was not merely a weapon but the "soul of the samurai". The crane motif (Tsuru) that decorates this Live Iaito is one of the most popular symbols in Japanese art. The crane is considered a sacred animal that lives for a thousand years and brings good fortune. The combination of this gentle symbol with a sharp blade and the warrior elements of the Menuki (Kabuto) reflects the philosophy of Bunbu Ryodo – the way of education (art) and the sword, which every educated samurai had to follow.

Maintenance and Sword Care

As this is a sword with a sharp steel blade, it requires regular care to prevent corrosion. After every training session or handling of the blade with bare hands, it is necessary to wipe the metal with a soft cloth and apply a thin layer of sword oil (e.g., camellia oil). We recommend not exposing the natural leather handle to extreme moisture. The Saya should be kept dry.

IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING

This sword IS SHARP. Unlike standard blunt Iaito swords, the Tori Live Iaito is a real weapon. Never use it for practicing partner techniques or for free fencing (sparring). Handle the sword with maximum caution and always ensure that no bystanders are within reach of the blade. Never strike hard or unsuitable materials that could damage the blade or cause it to deflect. Improper handling poses a risk of serious injury or death.

We recommend purchasing a traditional sword maintenance kit and a padded sword bag for safe transport along with this sword.
