Set of 100 Steel Lamellae for DIY Lamellar Armour, Niederstotzingen Type
Create Your Own Armour!
This set is the ideal foundation for your DIY project. The plates are ready for immediate use – just clean off the protective oil and start lacing. You can craft various pieces, such as:
- A lamellar cuirass (torso armour)
- Shoulder guards (spaulders)
- Tassets or other limb protections
They are perfect for portraying Lombards, Avars, early Byzantines, Goths, or Varangians. Your imagination is the only limit, constrained only by your skill.
Important Notice: This is a set of components for your own craftsmanship. The final protective qualities of the armour depend on the quality of your assembly (strength and material of the lacing, degree of overlap, etc.). Although crafted from steel, we do not recommend using the finished product for high-impact activities like buhurt.
Detailed Description and Specifications
Historically Accurate Design
The shape of each lamella precisely copies the originals found in grave 12 at Niederstotzingen. The characteristic hole placement and side cutout ensure that once laced, the plates fit together perfectly, creating a solid yet flexible defence with the correct overlap.
Material and Preparation
The lamellae are made from 1 mm (20 gauge) mild steel. They are intentionally delivered oiled, which acts as a temporary protective layer against corrosion during storage and transit. Before use, the oil can be easily wiped off with a cloth or degreased.

A Window into History
Lamellar armour, constructed from hundreds of small, interlaced plates, was the dominant type of armour in Eastern Europe and Asia for many centuries. Its popularity stemmed from its excellent combination of protection and flexibility. In Europe, it was primarily used by peoples influenced by Eastern and Byzantine cultures, such as the Avars, Magyars, and the Germanic Lombards.
An Archaeological Highlight: The Niederstotzingen site is one of the most significant Migration Period burial grounds in Germany. Grave 12 contained a high-ranking Alemannic or Lombard horseman, buried with luxurious weapons and the very remnants of the lamellar armour these replicas are based on. By purchasing these plates, you are touching a genuine piece of history!
Assembly and Care Guide
For the best results, we recommend thoroughly degreasing the lamellae before you begin. For lacing, use a strong material like 2-3 mm leather cord or waxed linen thread. If you wish to permanently protect the armour from rust, you can paint the plates or blacken them in oil before assembly. If you leave them in their raw steel state, remember to treat them regularly with a protective oil after use.
