Brass Washers for Riveting (11 x 4.2 mm) – Set of 50
An Essential Helper for Every Armourer and Leatherworker
These washers play a crucial role when riveting, especially in softer materials like leather, thick fabric, or thin sheet metal. Their function is simple but fundamental: they distribute the pressure of the set rivet over a larger surface area. This prevents the rivet from tearing through the material and significantly increases the strength and reliability of the entire joint.
How to Use a Rivet Washer
When riveting, push the shaft of the rivet through the materials you are joining. On the reverse side, place this washer over the rivet's shaft. Next, trim the shaft to the required length (typically protruding 1-2 mm past the washer) and carefully peen it with a hammer. The washer creates a solid, flat foundation for the peened head to press against. The result is a clean and extremely durable joint, whether you are attaching straps to a cuirass, fittings to a bag, or plates to one another.
The Unsung Hero of History
Although washers are often hidden on the inside of a finished piece, they were one of the most important components in historical craftsmanship. For centuries, riveting was the primary method for joining plates of armour, constructing helmets, and making sturdy leather equipment. Without quality rivets and washers, even the finest knight's armour would have literally fallen apart on the battlefield.
From the Craftsman's Bench
In essence, the washer is the rivet's "silent partner." While the rivet head and decorative fittings were visible on the outside and often boasted artistic details, these simple discs on the inside did the most important job—ensuring everything held together. The strength of medieval armour and equipment often depended on these inconspicuous but indispensable components.
Care and Properties
Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, requires very little maintenance. It does not react with normal humidity, so you don't have to worry about rust. Over time, it may develop a darker, historical patina, which is often desirable for replica items. If you wish to restore its original golden shine, simply polish it with a soft cloth and a suitable brass cleaner.
