Set of 5 Brass Strap Buckles "Fleur-de-Lis" (1250–1400)

Historical Insight: Symbol of Purity and Power

The lily motif (Fleur-de-Lis) is one of the most recognizable symbols of the Middle Ages. Between 1250 and 1400, the period to which this replica belongs, the lily was perceived not only as the emblem of French kings but also as a symbol of purity associated with the Virgin Mary. It can be found in architecture, on coins, seals, and naturally on clothing accessories. Buckles of this style were widely used during the Gothic era. They were not primarily used for holding up trousers but rather for fastening belts over outer garments, suspending purses and daggers, or as functional decoration on armor straps.

How to Use and Attach the Buckle

This buckle is designed as a single-piece casting with a movable pin. It is intended to be mounted on the end of a leather strap. Here is a brief guide on how to do it:

  • Strap Preparation: Ensure you have a strap with a width corresponding to the internal dimensions of the buckle (ideally up to 0.63 inches / 16 mm). The end of the strap where the buckle will be placed should be skived (thinned) so the leather does not become too bulky when folded.
  • Hole for the Pin: Punch an oval or oblong hole in the leather for the buckle pin to pass through.
  • Riveting: The buckle plate has two pre-made holes. Use brass rivets (not included) for fastening. Insert the rivet through the leather and the hole in the buckle, then peen it over a washer on the back to ensure a secure hold.

Care for Brass Fittings

To keep your buckles looking their best for years to come, they deserve a little care. Brass naturally oxidizes and darkens (develops a patina). If you prefer a high shine, the buckles can be polished with special metal polishing wadding or fine polishing paste. Avoid using steel wool or coarse sand, which would scratch the surface. Be mindful of long-term exposure to moisture and sweat – after an event, it is advisable to wipe the metal with a dry cloth and potentially oil it lightly (e.g., with armor oil or preservation wax) to slow down oxidation.

Note: Do not use these small decorative buckles for high-stress connections where extreme tension is expected (e.g., main load-bearing straps of heavy luggage); more massive forged buckles are better suited for such purposes.
