Set of 5 Brass Viking Belt Buckles with Strap Ends – Celtic Knot

Detailed Description of the Fittings Set

Each piece in this set is made of solid cast brass, ensuring durability and an authentic appearance. The set consists of two main components:

  • Buckle with Integrated Plate: The body of the buckle features a classic "D" shape that transitions smoothly into a triangular mounting plate. This plate is decorated with an openwork Triquetra (trinity knot) motif, which is typical of both Viking and Celtic art.
  • Strap End (Belt Tip): The second part of the set is designed for the free end of the belt. It corresponds in shape to the buckle and serves both an aesthetic and practical function – it weights the end of the strap so it hangs better and protects the leather from fraying.

This type of fitting is designed to be mounted on a leather strap using rivets (rivets are not included in the package and must be purchased separately). Thanks to the pre-cast holes, installation is intuitive and can be easily done at home.

Historical Context and Symbolism

In the Early Middle Ages, belts were not just functional items for holding up trousers or tunics. For Vikings, Celts, and Slavs, they represented an important status symbol. Richly decorated buckles and fittings made of non-ferrous metals clearly demonstrated the wealth of the wearer. The Triquetra motif adorning this set is an ancient symbol. In a pagan context, it could symbolize the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, or the three spheres of the world (land, sea, and sky). Later, this motif was adopted by Christianity as a symbol of the Holy Trinity. Such a blending of styles is typical of the period from the 9th to the 11th century.

Installation and Usage Instructions

To ensure your belt serves you well and the assembly goes smoothly, please follow these steps:

  1. Measure the width of your leather strap. This buckle is designed for straps with a maximum width of 2.8 cm (approx. 1.1 inches). A wider strap would bunch up and deform inside the buckle.
  2. Place the fittings on the leather and mark the positions for the holes.
  3. Create holes in the leather using a hole punch or an awl.
  4. Insert rivets and carefully peen them over using a hammer on a solid surface (anvil, steel plate).

Warning: While brass is a durable metal, it can crack if installed carelessly. Do not use excessive force when attaching it to leather that is too thick.

Care for Brass Products

Brass naturally oxidizes and develops a darker patina over time, which is often a desirable effect for historical replicas. However, if you prefer a high shine:

  • You can polish the buckle using special cleaners for non-ferrous metals.
  • For regular maintenance, simply wiping it with a dry, soft cloth is sufficient.
  • Do not expose the fittings to prolonged moisture or harsh chemicals.
