A Touch of History for Your Projects
This type of buckle, often referred to as a spectacle buckle due to its shape resembling a pair of glasses, appeared in Europe in the mid-14th century. It gained immense popularity during the 15th and 16th centuries, gradually replacing simpler single-frame buckles. They are found in archaeological discoveries on footwear, belts, and clothing accessories throughout Europe. Thanks to their simple yet strong design, they were favoured by all social classes, from common soldiers and townspeople to the nobility. They were used to fasten shoes, narrow belts, straps on gambesons, bags, or quivers.
How to Attach the Buckle to a Strap
Installing this buckle is straightforward and can be managed even by a beginner in leatherworking.
- At one end of your leather strap (maximum width 17 mm), make a slot for the buckle's tongue (pin).
- Fold this end of the strap over the central bar of the buckle.
- Secure the folded end firmly to the strap using a few stitches of strong thread or one or two rivets.
- On the other, free end of the strap, punch holes for fastening as required. You're all set!

Caring for Your Brass Accessories
To keep your new buckles looking their best for as long as possible, we recommend wiping them with a soft, dry cloth after use. Over time, brass will naturally develop a patina, which is desirable for many. However, if you prefer a shiny appearance, you can occasionally polish the buckles with a suitable brass cleaner.
What to Avoid
Do not expose the buckles to unnecessary moisture or aggressive chemicals (including sweat) to prevent rapid oxidation and verdigris. Do not use abrasive pastes or wire brushes for cleaning, as they could scratch the surface. The buckles are cast, so do not attempt to bend or deform them by force, as they could crack.
