Traditional Samurai Tanto Dagger Shiro with Sharp Carbon Steel Blade
Traditional Design and Construction
This dagger is crafted with the utmost emphasis on historical accuracy. The blade is hand-forged from 1045 carbon steel in the traditional shinogi-zukuri geometry and features a longitudinal fuller (bo-hi). Its authentic appearance is enhanced by a ground artificial temper line (hamon). The weapon boasts a long tang that is firmly secured within the handle (tsuka) by two bamboo pegs (mekugi), allowing for its complete disassembly. The handle is underlaid with genuine light ray skin and tightly wrapped with a white cotton cord in the classic Hineri-Maki style. All decorative elements, such as the simple black handguard (tsuba), collar (fuchi), ornaments beneath the wrap (menuki), and pommel cap (kashira), are made of metal. The blade collar (habaki) and washers (seppa) are brass. The dagger is supplied in a magnificent wooden scabbard (saya), finished in a brilliant high-gloss white lacquer and completed with a black-and-white tying cord (sageo).
Important Safety Warning
This dagger is equipped with a sharp blade, and handling it requires the utmost caution! Although the weapon is manufactured using traditional methods and is fully dismantlable, 1045 steel represents an entry-level class of carbon steel. The weapon is conceived primarily as a high-quality collector's piece and decoration. It is not intended for heavy practical use, such as cutting tests (tameshigiri) on hard targets, and is under no circumstances suitable for contact fencing or combat training. Careless or improper use carries not only the risk of damaging the blade but, above all, the danger of serious or fatal injury. Any handling or use of the weapon is entirely at your own risk.
Carbon Steel Maintenance
To ensure your Tanto retains its radiant appearance and the blade does not succumb to rust, regular care is essential. Carbon steel is susceptible to atmospheric moisture and the aggressive acids found in human sweat. Do not touch the blade with bare hands. After every time it is drawn from the scabbard, or if it is touched, wipe the blade carefully with a soft, dry cloth and apply a thin layer of oil. It is recommended to use traditional Japanese clove oil (choji) or a high-quality gun oil. Do not expose the weapon to extreme temperature fluctuations or high humidity.
