Hussite Flail Smržovka with Spikes, 15th Century
Crushing Power on a Chain
The flail, originally developed from the grain threshing tool, became a feared weapon during the 13th to 15th centuries. The "Smržovka" variant represents an advanced version with a spiked striking part, often called a morning star. The main tactical advantage of this weapon was the kinetic energy multiplied by the chain. The spikes on the steel ball did not stop at the shield's surface upon impact but tended to swing over the edge and hit the enemy covering behind it. Moreover, thanks to the free suspension, the shock was not transferred back into the handle, saving your hands from impact vibration.
The shaft is made of tough ash wood, which absorbs vibrations excellently and withstands rough handling. Its length allows for a grip with one or both hands (so-called hand-and-a-half grip), giving you versatility in reach and striking power. The connection of the chain and the shaft is secured by robust metal langets, which prevent the wood from splitting at the most stressed point.
Safety and Usage
It is important to realize that although this flail is made of high-quality structural steel, it is not intended for contact fencing (HEMA, buhurt, stage combat) against a living opponent. The reason lies in the physical nature of the weapon – the trajectory of the ball on the chain is difficult to control and can uncontrollably wrap around the opponent's weapon or limbs, which would cause serious injuries even in a blunt version. This product serves primarily as:
- A top-tier accessory for historical costumes.
- A decoration for your armoury or interior.
- A tool for practising forms and weapon handling (solo drills).
- A prop for photography or film.
Care Instructions
To ensure your flail lasts for years looking like new, it requires basic maintenance. Protect the metal parts (chain, ball, fittings) from moisture and regularly preserve them with oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil) to prevent corrosion. We recommend occasionally treating the wooden shaft with linseed oil or beeswax, which gives the wood resistance and a beautiful appearance. Store in a dry place.
