Small Utility Axe Head made of Carbon Steel – DIY Hatchet
Durable Material and Rustic Look
The axe head is produced using precision casting from 1030 carbon steel. The surface retains a raw, rustic character with a dark patina that evokes the hand-forged tools of old masters. The edge comes pre-ground from the factory to a thickness of approx. 0.5 mm (0.02 inches). If you intend to use the axe as a functional tool for woodwork, you will need to give it a final sharpening before first use.
It is important to note that while the steel is of good quality, this is a cast item. The head is excellent as a utility tool for light camp chores or as a costume prop. However, strictly do not use it for contact sparring (blade-on-blade) or throwing against hard targets, as this could damage the material.

Safety and Classification

Care and Hafting
Since this is made of carbon steel, it requires your care to prevent rust:
- Regularly treat the metal with oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun maintenance oil).
- If the hatchet gets wet, dry it immediately and re-oil it.
- When fitting a handle (not included), ensure the wood perfectly matches the shape of the eye. Secure it with a wooden wedge, and optionally add a metal wedge for maximum stability.
For this project, we recommend sourcing quality ash or hickory wood for the handle and perhaps some leather from our range to craft a custom sheath.
