Tanto Flores, Citadel, 1075 (DNH7) Steel, Chrysanthemum Theme
Are you looking for a tanto that is more than just a weapon? The Tanto Flores by Citadel is a masterpiece with deep meaning. Its name "Flores" (Flowers) refers to the handmade tsuba (guard) adorned with chrysanthemums. In Japan, the chrysanthemum (kiku) is a revered symbol of the Imperial Family and is featured on the Emperor's seal. But this tanto is not just beautiful. It is a fully functional, extremely sharp weapon. The blade is hand-forged from 1075 carbon steel (DNH7) and differentially hardened using traditional clay methods, giving it a razor-sharp edge (60 HRC) and a flexible spine (40 HRC). It's the perfect balance of art and lethal functionality. Further product information ...
Tanto Flores, Citadel, 1075 (DNH7) Steel, Chrysanthemum Theme
In samurai culture, the tanto was a personal weapon, worn for self-defence in spaces where a long sword was impractical, as well as for ritual purposes. It was a status symbol and a constant companion. This tanto from Citadel is entirely handmade, making every piece unique.
Sword Details
Blade (Nagasa)
The blade of this tanto is the pinnacle of the smith's art. It is hand-forged from DNH7 steel (identical to 1075 steel) and hardened in the traditional style using a clay coat. This process creates an authentic hardening line (hamon), which is revealed through meticulous hand-polishing. The edge reaches a hardness of approx. 60 HRC, ensuring exceptional cutting ability, while the spine of the blade remains softer (approx. 40 HRC) to absorb shock and prevent breakage.
Mountings (Koshirae)
The mountings are as impressive as the blade. Every detail is well-thought-out and honours the floral theme.
- Handle (Tsuka): It is covered with genuine white ray skin (samegawa) and tightly wrapped with black Japanese silk (tsuka-ito) in the traditional style.
- Menuki: Beneath the wrap are bronze menuki (ornaments) which also repeat the floral motif and improve grip.
- Tsuba and Fittings: The small guard (tsuba) carries the main chrysanthemum theme. The collar fuchi (see detail photo) is beautifully and intricately decorated.
- Scabbard (Saya): The wooden scabbard is coated with a glossy black lacquer. The key fittings – the mouth (koiguchi), cord knob (kurikata), and end-cap (kojiri) – are made from genuine buffalo horn.

Tanto Care
The DNH7 (1075) carbon steel blade is not stainless. To maintain its beauty and functionality, regular maintenance is essential. After every use, and even after every touch with a bare hand, wipe the blade immediately with a clean, soft cloth to remove moisture and fingerprints. Subsequently, apply a very thin layer of sword oil. For complete care, we recommend purchasing the Japanese Sword Maintenance Kit (OH2105).
