Urs Velunt Frankish Sword: The Blade of the Carolingian Empire
Evolution of the Sword: From North to Knighthood
Unlike Viking swords, this model features a longer and straighter crossguard (17.5 cm), providing better hand protection during fencing. The dominant feature is the steel wheel pommel (disc-shaped), which was typical for Frankish and late Viking weapons. The blade, made of high-quality spring steel, is hardened to 50-55° HRC, giving it excellent flexibility and resistance to breakage. The construction is full-tang – the blade runs through the entire handle and is securely peened at the end of the pommel. This guarantees that the sword won't fall apart even during dynamic use.
The wooden grip is wrapped in leather and features special ribbing that ensures a secure hold even with sweaty palms or chainmail gloves. Included is a leather-covered wooden scabbard reinforced with metal fittings, protecting the blade during transport.

Important Guidelines for Fencers
The sword has a blunt edge (approx. 1 mm) and a rounded tip, making it intended for fencing and drills. However, keep in mind that the edge is thinner than heavy "battle-ready" weapons (which usually have 2-3 mm). Therefore, it is ideal for technical fencing where parrying is done with the flat of the blade or at an angle. Avoid forceful "edge-on-edge" clashes to prevent unnecessary nicks (burrs) on the blade.
Since it is carbon steel, maintenance is required. Wipe the sword dry after every use and oil it (e.g., with WD-40 or gun oil); otherwise, it will corrode. Treat the leather on the grip and scabbard occasionally with balm.
To make your Frankish costume perfect, I recommend getting a suitable leather frog or belt for this sword, which you can find in our leather accessories section.
