Hand-and-a-Half Sword "Durant" with Cross Hilt and Scabbard

Function and Usage

This sword is constructed as a replica with a sharp blade. The carbon steel blade passes through the entire handle and is secured at the end by threading (screwed pommel). Although the blade is made of high-quality material and is flexible, the method of handle assembly and the sharpness of the blade determine its use:

  • Decoration and Costume: The sword is an ideal accessory for period costumes, photoshoots, or as a wall ornament.
  • Form Drills (Non-contact): Thanks to its balance, you can use it for practicing cuts in the air (shadow fencing) to get a feel for the weapon's weight.
  • Warning: This sword is not intended for contact fencing (HEMA, buhurt, stage combat). The screwed construction could loosen under hard impact against another weapon or shield. Furthermore, the sharp blade presents a serious risk of injury during contact combat.

Historical Context: The Bastard That Ruled the Battlefield

Swords of this type, often called "bastard swords" or "hand-and-a-half swords," became popular in the late Middle Ages (approximately the 14th and 15th centuries). The development of plate armour necessitated weapons that allowed for a stronger strike with both hands but could be wielded with just one hand if necessary (for example, when fighting from the saddle). The cross on your sword's pommel refers to the deep piety of medieval warriors, for whom the sword was not only a tool of war but also a symbol of faith.

Maintenance: Preventing Rust

Your sword is made of carbon steel. This means it is hard and durable, but unlike stainless steel, it requires care. Moisture is its enemy.

How to care for the sword:

  • Wipe the blade with a dry cloth after every touch with bare hands (human sweat is acidic).
  • Regularly preserve the blade with oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol, or gun oil).
  • Treat the leather parts of the scabbard and hilt with a leather conditioner to prevent cracking.
  • Do not store the sword in the scabbard for long periods, as leather can trap moisture and cause blade corrosion.
