Why Use Special Honing Oil?
A dry stone quickly becomes clogged ("glazed") and stops removing material. Ballistol Sharpening Oil prevents this:
- Pore Maintenance: The oil suspends metal dust (swarf), keeping it separate from the stone's abrasive surface.
- Corrosion Protection: While water can cause instant rust on carbon steel, this oil preserves the blade during the sharpening process.
- Smooth Action: The oil reduces friction and grinding noise; the blade glides more smoothly across the stone.
- Versatility: It is suitable for all types of grinding stones designed for oil usage.
Usage Instructions and Warning
Apply a few drops of oil to the stone's surface and spread it. Add more oil as needed during sharpening to keep the surface wet. After finishing, wipe the stone with a cloth to remove the dirty oil containing metal residue.
Important Warning: Never use this oil on Japanese water stones! The oil would permanently clog their porous structure and ruin them. It is intended exclusively for stones that are not lubricated with water.
