German Articulated Gorget with Roped Edge, 1450–1520

Historical Style and Evolution

During the period from 1450 to 1520, armor design shifted significantly. The protection of the throat evolved from the rigid bevor (often attached to the helmet) to the independent gorget worn over or under the cuirass. This model reflects the skilled craftsmanship of German armorers, featuring a distinct rolled "roped" edge on the top lame. This is not just a beautiful decorative element; it serves as a deflector (stop-rib) to catch blades sliding down from the helmet, preventing them from striking the throat.

The gorget is articulated, meaning the neck section consists of moving lames. This allows you to tilt your head and look around comfortably. The extended front plate protects the upper chest and collarbones. It comes supplied with a leather strap at the bottom for attachment to a breastplate or placard, though this can be easily removed if not needed.

Safety and Usage Info

This product is made from sturdy 1.6 mm steel, making it excellent for historical reenactment, stage combat, and LARP. However, it is not explicitly rated for full-contact heavy combat sports (like Buhurt/HMB) where hardened steel is often required.
Recommendation: Always wear a padded collar or a gambeson underneath the gorget to prevent chafing and to absorb impact energy properly.

Maintenance

As this item is made of mild steel (not stainless), it requires care to prevent rust:

  • Store in a dry environment.
  • Wipe dry immediately after use to remove sweat and moisture.
  • Regularly oil the surface with mineral oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol) or synthetic armor wax.
