Are you looking for reliable protection that won't fail you in a historical battle, while also expressing your knightly honour? This triangular Templar shield is exactly what your gear is missing. Its design is based on the innovations of the late 12th century, when shields began to elongate and be shaped to better protect the legs and torso of both cavalrymen and infantrymen. The combination of black and white symbolizes the duality of knighthood – determination in battle and purity of spirit. Furthermore, the white surface directly invites you to paint your own unique coat of arms and distinguish yourself in the ranks of the army. Further product information ...

Two-Tone Knight's Shield with Templar Spirit and Blank Heraldic Surface

The shield is constructed with an emphasis on practical use in re-enactment or LARP. The construction of solid plywood covered with canvas ensures a great balance between historical accuracy and durability. Thanks to the sophisticated leather strapping system on the back, the shield becomes a natural extension of your arm, allowing you to effectively parry blows and lead counterattacks. Remember, a correctly chosen shield is not just passive protection, but an active tool for your victory.

How to Properly Hold and Use a Medieval Shield?

This model is designed for right-handed users (held in the left arm). The strapping system is designed to distribute weight and save your strength during long encounters:

  • Combat Grip (Enarmes): Grasp the crossed straps firmly in your left palm. Slide your arm through the wider strap so it sits securely on your forearm/elbow area.
  • Padding: The square pad under the straps cushions the impacts hitting the shield and protects your arm from abrasions against the wooden body.
  • Carrying Strap (Guige): Drape the longest adjustable strap over your shoulder and around your neck. The main weight of the shield will thus rest on your torso, so your left arm won't tire as quickly. In a relaxed state, this strap allows you to carry the shield comfortably on your back.

Historical Context and Fun Fact

This type of shield, often called a "kite shield" or "heater shield," became an icon of the Crusades. While earlier shields were round and protected only the centre of the body, this elongated shape allowed riders to protect their left leg in the stirrup, which was otherwise very vulnerable. An interesting fact: the colours black and white were typical for the Templar banner known as the Baucent. The black colour was intended to strike fear into enemies, while white promised safety and purity to the friends of the Order.

Maintenance and Safety Instructions

To ensure the shield serves you as long as possible, give it basic care:

  • Canvas Care: After a battle, clean the shield of mud and dust with a damp cloth. If the paint is damaged, you can repair it with acrylic paint.
  • Leather Care: Occasionally treat the leather straps with a leather balm containing beeswax to keep them flexible and prevent cracking.
  • Storage: Store the shield in a dry environment. Long-term humidity could cause the plywood to warp or mould to form on the canvas.
  • Warning: Although the shield is robust, it is not intended for full-contact combat of the Buhurt type (HMB/BotN) with steel weapons. Very heavy blows can cause edge damage or punctures.

We recommend purchasing a high-quality gambeson to go with this shield to increase your comfort and safety when handling armour.
