The traditional round shield known as the Targe (derived from the Gaelic an targaid) served as the primary defensive equipment for Scottish Highlanders from the 16th century through the mid-18th century. During this turbulent era of clan warfare and border raids, a warrior required lightweight yet resilient protection. The Targe was strapped securely to the wielder's left forearm using dual leather straps, leaving the left hand free to hold a Scottish dirk or control horse reins.
In battle, the Targe was vital to the legendary Highland Charge. Rushing enemy ranks, Highlanders wielded their targes to catch bayonet thrusts and deflect saber strikes from British infantry, creating vital openings to deliver lethal blows with their basket-hilted broadswords. Together, the Targe and broadsword formed a formidable weapons system on early modern battlefields.
Significance of the Name – Battle of Culloden
