Large Ostrich Feather for Historical Hats 60–65 cm – Various Colours

A Symbol of Status and Extravagance in History

Ostrich feathers were not just simple decorations in history. They were symbols of wealth, power, and often military rank. In the Renaissance period, and especially during the Thirty Years' War, the fashion of decorating hats with feathers reached its peak. The famous Landsknechts were renowned for their berets (Baretts), which often featured a whole cascade of these feathers, underlining their flamboyant and boisterous image. Later, in the era of Musketeers and Cavaliers, one or two long plumes adorned the wide brims of felt hats, adding elegance to the fencers with every movement. In the civilian sphere, ostrich feathers were a prized commodity in millinery from the 18th century right through to the flapper era of the 1920s.

Usage and Installation

This feather is ideal for decorating historical headgear – from flat caps and berets to bicorn or tricorn hats and top hats. Thanks to the sturdy quill (spine), it can be easily tucked into a hatband, sewn on, or fastened with a decorative brooch or badge. The feather is also suitable for:

  • Making historical fans.
  • Theatre and film costumes.
  • Period writing instruments (although goose quills were more commonly used for writing, ostrich feathers served as decorative elements).
  • Boudoir-style interior decoration.

How to Care for Feathers

Ostrich feathers are natural materials that require gentle handling to maintain their volume and beauty:

  • Fluffing: If the feather has become flattened during transport or storage, hold it briefly over hot steam (e.g., from a kettle) and shake it gently. The steam straightens the fibres beautifully and restores their volume.
  • Water: Avoid direct contact with rain. A wet ostrich feather looks bedraggled and can become permanently deformed. If you do get wet, let the feather air dry and then use the steam trick.
  • Cleaning: Dust is best removed using a hair dryer on the lowest cool setting or by very gentle dusting.
  • What NOT to do: Never wash the feather in a washing machine, do not iron it, and do not snap the central quill by force.
