Although folding hand fans originated in ancient China and Japan, they began to be imported to Europe in large numbers during the 16th century and quickly became a symbol of high social status. While original historical pieces used ivory, tortoiseshell, or precious woods for their sticks, our model cleverly utilizes modern materials for maximum durability during scenic use. Feathers experienced a massive boom as a decorative element, especially during the Baroque, Rococo, and later Art Nouveau periods.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, an intricate fan language developed in European courts. It allowed ladies to communicate messages to gentlemen that would have caused a scandal if spoken aloud:

• Placing the closed fan to the lips: I desire a kiss.
• Carrying the open fan in the left hand: I would like to dance.
• Carrying the fan in the right hand in front of the face: I am not interested in dancing or company.
• Opening and closing the fan rapidly: I am nervous or impatient.
• Fanning slowly: I am spoken for.

How to Properly Care for Your Feather Fan

To keep the feathers fluffy and soft for a long time, we recommend storing the fan in a closed box or fabric bag where it will be protected from dust and the feathers will not be bent. If the feathers get slightly ruffled, simply smooth them gently with your fingers in the direction of the fiber growth. Carefully blow off any dust using the cold air setting of a hairdryer on the lowest power.

Safety Guidelines and Warnings

Remember that both natural feathers and the plastic frame are highly flammable materials. Never handle the fan in the immediate vicinity of an open flame, candles, or torches. Protect the fan from heavy rain and getting wet – wet feathers lose their volume, and dyed variants could bleed color onto your expensive costume. Always open the fan smoothly, avoiding jerky movements beyond the physical limits of the structure.
