Are you looking for a helmet that combines the sleek aesthetics of the late Middle Ages with uncompromising functionality? This German Sallet is an icon of the late 15th century. Between 1450 and 1500, no warrior went to war without proper head protection, and the sallet (often alongside the barbute) dominated the battlefields. Its design, partially obscuring the face and elongating the silhouette backwards, gave wearers a dehumanized, almost "ghostly" appearance. This created a significant psychological effect on enemies, especially when worn by mercenary troops. This replica by Marshal Historical offers you precisely that formidable look found in museums, enhanced with a practical articulated neck guard. Further product information ...

German Gothic Sallet with Visor and Articulated Tail (1450–1490)

This sallet is a masterpiece of armour craftsmanship inspired by the German Gothic style. Its most distinctive feature is the movable visor, allowing you to instantly switch between "maximum protection" and "better visibility/ventilation". The visor is supplied without breathing holes, staying true to many historical originals. This clean surface also provides a blank canvas for customisation—if you prefer a specific pattern of breathing holes, you can drill them yourself.

Another key feature is the articulated (laminated) tail. Unlike simple one-piece bowls, the back of this helmet consists of sliding plates (lames). This ensures significantly greater comfort and mobility when tilting your head back, without sacrificing protection for your neck. The helmet is made of approx. 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel, offering an ideal balance between durability and weight for most historical activities.

History and Usage

Sallets evolved from kettle hats and bascinets. In the 15th century, they became the most popular helmet in Central and Western Europe, worn by both heavy cavalry (knights) and infantry. They were often paired with a plate gorget (bevor) to protect the lower face and throat. This helmet type is perfect for re-enacting the Wars of the Roses, the Burgundian Wars, or late medieval mercenary campaigns.

Safety Warning: Although the helmet is made of high-quality 1.6 mm steel, it is a replica primarily intended for re-enactment, stage combat, or LARP. It is not designed for full-contact heavy combat such as Buhurt (HMB, Battle of the Nations), where thicker materials and specific safety certifications are required. However, it will serve you excellently for standard historical fencing and light combat.

Size Chart

The measurements correspond to the head circumference measured around the forehead. If you plan to wear a thick padded cap (arming cap) underneath, remember to account for the extra bulk when choosing your size.

Size Head Circumference
M 60 – 62 cm (approx. 23.6 – 24.4 inches)
L 63 – 64 cm (approx. 24.8 – 25.2 inches)

Care Instructions

Since the helmet is made of mild steel without a stainless coating, it is prone to rust; this is a natural characteristic of the material, not a defect. To keep your helmet looking its best:

  • Wipe it dry after every use. Sweat and moisture are the biggest enemies of steel armour.
  • Regularly oil the surface and the interior with mineral oil (e.g., WD-40, gun oil) or a protective wax.
  • Store it in a dry place.

My Tip for You: For maximum comfort and a complete historical look, I recommend wearing the helmet with a padded arming cap. If you want to complete your armour set, look for a steel bevor (chin guard), which forms an inseparable pair with this type of sallet.
