Medieval Women's Leather Shoes Bathhouse Maid with Decorative Cutouts

The Practical Elegance of Medieval Women

While the high nobility competed in the length and extravagance of their poulaines, working women and townswomen chose footwear that was aesthetically pleasing but allowed for normal movement and labour. These low shoes with a more open instep drawn together by a leather cord represent exactly such a historical compromise. The cut-out motif ensures breathability, which bathhouse maids in humid and warm baths, as well as women at summer markets, certainly appreciated. The slightly upturned toe protects against stubbing, and the sturdy sole with a low heel guarantees stability.

Proper Care for a Long Lifespan

Leather is a natural material that requires regular maintenance. Straight from production, the shoes are treated with a nourishing beeswax balm. To prevent the leather from drying out and cracking, regularly rub leather oil or wax balm into it. This will soften the material and help it better resist moisture. The leather will naturally darken slightly after the application of these products. Always allow wet shoes to dry very slowly at room temperature after an event. Under no circumstances should you dry them near a fire, on a radiator, or in direct sunlight. Any scratches can be easily hidden with tinted shoe polish.

Important Information on Colours and Sizes

The most natural colours for these shoes are black, dark brown, and light brown (natural). However, you can also choose other shades (e.g., blue, as seen in the photographs). These unconventional colours are created by applying a special covering lacquer paint. Please bear in mind that this layer may crack or flake slightly over time in the stressed bending areas. For occasional festival wear, this finish is perfectly adequate, but for high and regular stress, we strongly recommend naturally dyed leathers.

If you wear orthotic insoles and decide to opt for our custom-made footwear production, it is absolutely essential that you physically post these insoles to us. We will seat them precisely into your new shoes to provide you with maximum support.

We highly recommend you purchase a high-quality linen skirt and a canvas apron from our range to accompany these charming shoes, bringing your bathhouse maid or tavern wench costume to absolute perfection.
