Leg Wraps Through History
A Necessity for Men and Women
The practice of wrapping one's lower legs was extremely common among many Early Medieval cultures, particularly Germanic tribes, Vikings, Franks, and Anglo-Saxons. These strips of fabric, wound from the ankle to just below the knee, served as a substitute for the stockings or socks that were not common at the time. These leg bindings protected the legs from cold and injury and were worn by both men and women during virtually all activities, from working in the fields to going on raids.
More Than Just a Strip of Cloth
The quality and colour of leg wraps could say a lot about the social status of their wearer. While common folk wore undyed, coarser fabrics, wealthier individuals could afford finer woollen cloths dyed with expensive pigments. For an even more spectacular look and a more secure fastening, the ends of the wraps were often secured with decorative brooches, known as fibulae, which could be works of art in themselves.
