While the nobility of this time often wore tight-fitting split hose, common villagers, market vendors, craftsmen, and innkeepers preferred looser and more practical trousers that did not restrict them during hard labour. The chosen material, fustian (often referred to as moleskin or duvetine), is an exceptionally strong woven fabric made of 100% cotton. In the past, fustian was considered the ideal choice for workwear due to its longevity and outstanding ability to retain body heat.

Today, you can perfectly utilise these trousers in historical reenactment, town festivals, and LARP events. They are a highly popular choice for costumes depicting burghers, merchants, and highwaymen. For a flawless historical appearance, we recommend that you complement the trousers with a linen shirt, a sturdy leather belt with a brass buckle, and leather medieval footwear typologically corresponding to the 15th century. Care and Maintenance of Cotton Fustian

To ensure the trousers serve you well for a long time and maintain their original appearance, it is necessary to care for them properly. The fustian consists entirely of 100% cotton, which makes maintenance considerably easier. It is recommended that the trousers be washed in a washing machine at a temperature of 30 to 40 °C (86 to 104 °F) on a gentle cycle. Standard laundry detergents without bleach should be used for washing, as bleach could permanently damage the colour of the fabric. Tumble drying is strongly discouraged. It is much more suitable to hang the trousers and let them air dry naturally, ideally out of direct and harsh sunlight so the material does not fade. Ironing can be done on a medium setting intended for cotton fabrics. The trousers should never be exposed to open flames or extreme heat sources, as irreversible burning of this natural material could occur.
