Prussian Infantry Hanger M1715 | 18th Century Short Saber

Design and Features

The first thing you'll notice is the solid brass hilt. The spiral-grooved grip isn't just for decoration; it provides a secure and firm hold. The integrated knuckle bow offers protection for your hand. The blade is made of forged carbon steel, single-edged and slightly curved, designed for close-quarters combat and utility.

The hanger comes with a high-quality scabbard made of a wood core covered in black leather, featuring brass fittings (throat and chape) that match the hilt and protect the sword tip.

Usage and Safety

Although the manufacturer labels this sword as "battle-ready," at Outfit4Events we prioritize your safety. Since there is no warranty against blade breakage during combat use, we STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST using this hanger for full-contact fencing, reenactment fighting, or cutting tests. It is perfectly suited for:

  • Living History & Re-enactment: An essential part of the uniform for Prussian infantrymen or Grenadiers.
  • LARP & Cosplay: Adds authority and style to mercenaries, officers, or pirate characters.
  • Drills: Suitable for practicing drawing, carrying, and foot drills.
  • Decoration: An impressive display piece for your collection.

Historical Context

Why a short saber? In the 18th century, the musket and bayonet were the primary weapons of the infantry. The hanger (in German Infanteriesäbel or Faschinenmesser) served as a sidearm for self-defense but was also a tool. Soldiers used it to cut fascines (bundles of brushwood) for fortifications and for camp chores. For Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs), it was a symbol of rank and a tool to enforce discipline within the ranks.

Care Instructions

Your new hanger needs some care to stay in top condition. Carbon steel is not stainless and can rust if neglected. Wipe the blade with a dry cloth after handling and apply a light coat of oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil). The brass hilt may develop a patina over time; if you prefer a shiny look, use a metal polish. Do not store the blade in the leather scabbard for long periods without inspection, as leather can trap moisture.

We recommend pairing this hanger with a leather belt frog to carry it comfortably at your side.
