Brown Viking Leather Belt Pouch with Braided Loops and Forged Pin
Historical Context and Norse Symbolism
The inspiration for this practical pouch comes from the rugged environment of the Shetland Islands and dates back to roughly the late 12th century. During this time, the rule and direct cultural influence of the Norwegian kings were strongly felt here, which was also reflected in everyday material culture. A stylised Viking symbolism is stamped on the flap of the bag – a complex knotwork pattern whose shape evokes a winged lizard or dragon. Such intertwined animal motifs often fulfilled a protective function in Old Norse art and demonstrated the strength of the wearer.
Practical Use and Leather Maintenance
The pouch is worn comfortably suspended on a belt. It is attached using two leather loops, which are symbolically and very aesthetically braided into a knotwork shape. This element not only looks great but also helps to distribute the weight of the bag well. The fastening is solved in a highly historical and reliable way – using a hand-forged iron pin (toggle), which is fixed to the bag by a safety leather cord and passed through the front loop. To ensure the cowhide remains soft and weather-resistant for many years, we recommend treating it at least twice a year with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If the bag gets wet on an expedition, dry it exclusively slowly at normal room temperature. Never expose it to the direct heat of a fire or a hot radiator, as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack. For safety reasons, do not carry sharp objects, such as unprotected knives, in the bag to prevent cutting through the leather and injuring yourself.
