Two-Tone Early Gothic Leather Belt Pouch with Quatrefoil Motif

Historical Context and Thoughtful Design

During the High Middle Ages, specifically at the turn of the 13th century, sewn-in pockets were not a standard part of everyday clothing. Necessary daily items, such as coins, flint and steel, tinder, or a personal seal, had to be carried securely on one's person. Belt pouches served exactly this purpose. The stylised four-petal flower or quatrefoil was a very popular decorative motif in architecture and applied arts during this period. It demonstrated the wearer's good taste and social standing. The two-tone design, where the pierced top layer of leather reveals a light-coloured background, is a testament to advanced and highly valued leatherworking craftsmanship.

Practical Use on the Battlefield and at the Market

The pouch is primarily designed to be suspended from a belt. On its back, two wide leather loops are firmly attached, through which a belt with a maximum width of 4 cm (approx. 1.57 inches) can be comfortably threaded. The closure of the pouch is simple, functional, and completely period-accurate: a long leather strap, firmly attached to the flap, is passed through a loop in the lower part of the pouch and secured with a firm, braided terminal knot. This historical system reliably prevents accidental opening, even when running, dancing, or during combat engagements.

How to Properly Care for Your Leather Pouch

To ensure that your natural leather pouch serves you for many years and develops a gorgeous historical patina, it requires regular maintenance. It is advisable to treat the leather occasionally with a high-quality leather balm or natural beeswax. This process will keep the material supple and increase its resistance to moisture and dirt. If you get caught in the rain at a historical event, always let the pouch dry slowly at normal room temperature. Never dry the leather directly on a radiator, near a roaring fire, or in glaring summer sunlight, as it would harden and crack irreversibly. Completely avoid using aggressive chemical cleaners, and the product must not go in a washing machine under any circumstances.

Please note: Because this product is handcrafted from natural materials, slight variations in colour and surface texture may occur. These minor imperfections are a mark of the leather's authenticity, do not diminish functionality, and make every piece a unique original.

To accompany this decorated pouch, we highly recommend purchasing a high-quality medieval belt with a forged buckle from our extensive range, on which the pouch will sit perfectly and securely.
