Late Medieval Linen Kirtle (Cotte) – Blue, 14th-15th Century

Authentic Cut for Your Historical Persona

The design of this dress faithfully replicates period garments of the late Middle Ages, which were valued for their practicality and elegance.

Construction Details

The dress is floor-length and cut without a waist seam, giving it a flowing and elegant appearance. The body of the dress is made of rectangular panels, while the skirt gains volume and freedom of movement from sewn-in side gores. It features set-in short sleeves. The front of the bodice laces up, allowing for a perfect fit to the figure. The neckline and lacing panel area are reinforced with a linen facing (doubled fabric) to prevent stretching and increase durability. This facing is top-stitched to keep it neatly in place. The eyelets for the lacing are carefully hand-finished. Other visible seams, such as topstitching and hems, are machine-sewn, as are all construction seams.

Lightweight and Breathable 100% Linen

The dress is made from 100% linen fabric with a weight of 150 g/m² in a beautiful blue colour. Linen is a natural material that was widely used in the Middle Ages and prized for its exceptional properties.

Linen in History and Its Advantages

Historically, wool was the most common material for outer garments like kirtles. However, linen was also available and commonly used, especially in its natural undyed form, for underwear, headwear, and linings. There is also evidence of dyed linen being used for dresses in certain periods and locations. Linen kirtles are popular today among reenactors and LARPers because they are better suited for warm weather. As a natural fibre, linen breathes excellently, wicks moisture away from the body, and thus helps to keep you cool and comfortable. It is an excellent choice for summer events or as a cooler garment option.

The Versatile Foundation of Your Medieval Wardrobe

This dress is incredibly versatile and will become a cornerstone of your historical or fantasy outfits. You can wear it on its own, over an underdress (smock, shift, chemise), and accessorize it with various items such as pin-on sleeves, belts, jewellery, or historical headwear. It can serve as a base layer under more opulent overgowns or be worn over a long-sleeved dress for an interesting contrasting and layered look.

Tips for Wearing and Combinations

Pair it with sturdy shoes and an apron for a practical look while working in camp, or attach decorated sleeves, add a beautiful overgown and headwear, and set off for a courtly festival. The possibilities are almost endless!

Available Sizes

The dress is available in sizes S, M, L, XL, and XXL. To select the correct size, we recommend using your chest measurement as a guide and consulting the manufacturer's general size chart if available.
