Custom Leather Seax Scabbard with Celtic Knot Braided Suspension
Historical Context and Proper Seax Carrying
The seax (or sax) was a characteristic single-edged knife or short sword of the early Middle Ages, highly popular among Germanic tribes and Vikings alike. It served as both a secondary weapon and a universal tool for everyday tasks. Historically, seax scabbards were worn suspended horizontally from the belt. An interesting fact is that the weapon was sheathed with the cutting edge facing upwards. The reason was simple: this prevented the sharp edge from slicing through the leather seam on the bottom of the scabbard while walking or riding. The two beautifully braided leather loops on this scabbard are designed precisely for this secure and stable horizontal attachment to your historical belt.
Custom Manufacturing and Preparation for Use
To ensure the scabbard fulfills its purpose perfectly, it is made exclusively to measure for a specific weapon. If you order this scabbard together with any seax from our range, it will automatically be custom-made to fit that purchased weapon perfectly. However, if you wish to have a scabbard made for your own seax, it is absolutely essential that you send your weapon to us by post beforehand. The sheath will then be shaped and stitched precisely to its shape and dimensions. To maintain the leather's suppleness and protect it from moisture, we recommend regularly treating the scabbard with a high-quality beeswax leather balm.
Safety and Important Warnings
Never insert a blade into the leather scabbard that is wet, muddy, or heavily soiled. Trapped moisture would quickly cause your weapon to rust and damage the leather. If you are caught in heavy rain at a LARP or period event, let the scabbard dry naturally at room temperature upon your return. Drying it near an open fire or on a hot radiator will irreversibly destroy the leather, causing it to harden and crack. Please also note that carrying sharp weapons is entirely at your own risk, and heightened caution is required when drawing a sharp blade.
Recommended Accessories
For flawless attachment, we highly recommend purchasing a long Viking belt with a brass or iron buckle to go with this scabbard, and polishing off the overall look with a practical leather pouch in a matching colour tone.
