Brown Leather Scabbard for Viking Swords with Integrated Belt Loop
Historical Context and Scabbard Construction
During the early Middle Ages (8th to 11th centuries), the sword was an immensely valuable weapon that required constant protection from the elements. While the ornate scabbards of kings and jarls often consisted of a wooden core covered in fine leather and richly decorated with bronze or silver fittings, common warriors and mercenaries utilized simpler, highly durable all-leather scabbards. This particular model is honestly stitched with strong thread along the edges, fully conforming to traditional and proven leatherworking techniques of the era. The integrated leather loop on the back allows for vertical suspension at the hip, which was the absolute standard for shorter and medium-length cutting weapons.
How to Properly Attach and Use the Scabbard
Attaching the scabbard to your gear is absolutely intuitive and quick. You simply thread your belt through the firmly attached rear leather loop. The loop is spacious enough for standard period straps. In terms of internal dimensions, the scabbard is directly compatible with selected replicas from our range (e.g., Viking Sword Udom, Class D, Viking Sword Wheeler type VI, Class D). Always insert the blade smoothly and without excessive force to prevent the sharp edges from cutting into the internal walls.
Proper Genuine Leather Care Instructions
This high-quality product is handmade from genuine cowhide leather with an honest thickness of 3.0 to 3.5 mm (approx. 0.12 - 0.14 inches). Minor natural variations in colour and surface texture are characteristic properties of this noble material and make each piece a unique original. To ensure the leather maintains its extreme strength, flexibility, and moisture resistance over the long term, it requires regular care. We recommend treating the exterior of the scabbard at least once a season, or after getting wet in the rain, with a high-quality leather balm based on beeswax. Never dry the leather near a direct heat source (radiator, hairdryer, the open flames of a campfire), otherwise it could harden, become brittle, and crack.
Crucial Safety Warnings
The scabbard is made of massive leather; however, please bear in mind that the interior does not contain a wooden core. If you are housing a sword with a sharply honed blade, handle the weapon with the utmost caution. Inserting the blade roughly or carelessly could cause the sharp point to pierce the leather and cause injury. Additionally, protect the scabbard from unnecessary friction against the sharp edges of shields or mail armour.
Recommended Accessories
For an absolutely flawless and complete period look, we highly recommend suspending this scabbard from one of our sturdy Viking leather belts and pairing it with a period pouch from our extensive range of early medieval equipment.
