HEMA Langes Messer Johannes Lecküchner, Spring Steel Sparring Sword

Usage and Historical Context

This weapon is based on the historical Langes Messer (long knife), which saw immense popularity in Central Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries. Originally, it was a weapon of commoners and townsfolk. Due to strict guild regulations, the hilt could not be constructed using traditional sword-making methods; instead, wooden scales were riveted directly to the blade's tang—just like ordinary knives. However, it quickly evolved into a highly effective sidearm, whose combat techniques were meticulously detailed by master Johannes Lecküchner himself.

Our product is fully adapted for modern sports fencing. The blade features a thickened, spatulated, and rounded tip to prevent it from piercing fencing armour during thrusts. A defining feature is the Nagel (nail) protruding from the crossguard, which reliably protects your knuckles from incoming strikes.

Detailed Look and Premium Materials

The replica is forged with maximum durability in mind. The weapon belongs to the premium SWHZ series. This means the heat treatment process is conducted entirely in the manufacturer's own factory, ensuring strict quality control. The blade is made from high-quality spring steel, tempered to withstand the demands of heavy sparring. On the blade, you can spot an elegant engraving depicting a beast's head pierced by a sword, adding a distinctive character to the weapon.

The hilt consists of wooden scales securely fixed to the stout tang with solid brass rivets. The pommel boasts an asymmetrical shape typical for Messers, aiding in a secure grip and preventing the weapon from slipping out of your hand during powerful cuts.

Safety and Practical Application

The weapon is designed as a blunt and flexible training tool for drills and full-contact combat. As the equivalent of a single-handed sword or side sword, the blade's flex range sits safely at approximately 6 to 8 kgs (13.2 to 17.6 lbs). Nevertheless, we strongly advise that full-contact sparring with steel weapons carries inherent risks. Use the weapon solely with appropriate, certified protective gear. Neither the manufacturer nor the seller is liable for injuries caused by improper or dangerous use.

Maintenance

  • Wipe the blade with a dry cloth after every training session to remove sweat and moisture.
  • Regularly coat the metal parts with gun oil (e.g., Ballistol) to prevent surface rust.
  • Periodically check the tightness of the rivets and the seating of the crossguard.
  • Avoid striking hard materials (stones, metal poles) that could irreversibly damage the blade.

Recommended Accessories

For safe practice, we highly recommend pairing this Messer with a high-quality HEMA mask with back-of-the-head protection, a padded gambeson, and heavy-duty fencing gloves.
