Oakeshott Type XIIa "Great Sword of War" with Scabbard
History and Construction
Type XIIa swords are characterized by their broad, flat blade with a prominent fuller extending about two-thirds of the length. This design was optimized for devastating cutting blows capable of shearing through maille or damaging helms. Although primarily a cutting sword, the sharp point allows for effective thrusting as well.
This replica features a blade forged from 65Mn spring steel. To ensure good handling, the blade features a distal taper towards the tip. The crossguard and wheel pommel are made of stainless steel. This is a practical modern feature that ensures high durability and eliminates the need for constant polishing of these parts. The grip and scabbard are wrapped in high-quality synthetic leather (PU) in a burgundy hue. This material looks authentic and feels good to the touch, but unlike organic leather, it resists moisture better and does not require waxing.
Usage and Maintenance
Thanks to its construction and materials, this sword is suitable for handling practice, technique drills (without contact with other steel), or as a durable accessory for LARP and cosplay. With a point of balance 11 cm (4.3 in) from the guard, the weapon feels powerful in the cut, exactly as you would expect from a war sword.
Care Instructions: Although the guard and pommel are stainless, the blade is made of high-carbon steel and can rust. Wipe it dry after every use and oil it (e.g., with WD-40 or gun oil). The synthetic leather can simply be wiped with a damp cloth; leather conditioner is not necessary.
Safety Warnings
This is a functional replica made of quality steel. The blade may be supplied with a sharp edge. The sword is not intended for "edge-on-edge" contact sparring with other steel weapons, as this will damage the edge. Please exercise extreme caution when handling. Use of the weapon is at your own risk.
