Gothic Steel Bevor with Articulated Visor – Late Medieval Neck Armour

Features and Usage

Designed to be worn primarily with open-faced helmets like a sallet or kettle hat, this bevor features a segmented design typical of the Gothic period. The upper plate is articulated, meaning you can raise or lower it depending on the situation. Raise it for maximum protection in battle (covering up to the nose/eyes), or lower it to breathe freely and speak clearly. A discreet locking pin on the right side secures the visor in the raised position.

The craftsmanship includes rolled and roped edges, which not only look historically accurate but also serve to deflect enemy blades away from your neck. Ventilation holes are punched into the upper plate to improve airflow. The back is open for comfort and is secured with a sturdy leather strap and an antique-finish brass buckle. Additionally, pointing ties (laces with aglets) at the bottom allow you to attach the bevor securely to your gambeson or breastplate to prevent it from shifting during movement.

Safety and Recommendations

While this piece looks formidable, it is important to match the armour to the activity.

  • Suitable for: LARP, stage combat, cosplay, Ren Faires, and light reenactment.
  • Not suitable for: Full-contact heavy combat such as Buhurt (Battle of the Nations). The 18-gauge (1.2 mm) steel is not designed to withstand full-force blows from heavy steel polearms or axes used in these extreme sports.

For your comfort, I strongly recommend wearing a padded arming cap or a gambeson with a high collar underneath. This prevents the metal from chafing against your collarbones and absorbs impact energy.

Care Instructions

This product is made from mild steel, which is not stainless. To ensure it lasts a long time, follow these simple steps:

  • Keep it dry. Wipe off sweat or moisture immediately after use.
  • Apply a thin layer of oil (such as Ballistol or WD-40) regularly to prevent rust.
  • If surface rust appears, it can be easily removed with a scouring pad and a bit of oil.
