Medieval Linen Braies Natural

The foundation of any high-quality historical costume begins where few people look—at the underwear. These medieval braies (breeches) are designed to provide you with maximum comfort and an authentic feel, whether you are preparing for a battle, a LARP, or a historical fair. You can choose from two material options: 100% linen for purists demanding historical accuracy, or a cotton/linen blend for those seeking a softer touch and easier care. Thanks to the loose fit and adjustable waist, they fit like a glove and won't restrict your movement, even under full armour. Further product information ...

Medieval Linen Braies | Linen or Blend | Natural

Comfort and Hygiene of the Medieval Man

Braies are the essential hygienic layer separating your body from outer woollen clothing or a gambeson. The loose, knee-length cut ensures airflow, which you will especially appreciate on hot summer days. The waist features a drawstring tie, allowing you to adjust the circumference exactly to your figure. The cords are finished with metal aiglets, preventing fraying and making tying easier.

Material Options

  • 100% Linen: The most historically accurate choice. Linen is extremely strong, breathable, wicks sweat superbly, and has natural antibacterial properties. This is the material worn by Vikings and knights alike.
  • Blend (87% Cotton, 13% Linen): A modern compromise combining the look of linen with the softness of cotton. The fabric feels more pleasant against bare skin and wrinkles less.

Size Chart

Size Max. Waist (fabric width) Total Length
S/M 37.5–47" (96–120 cm) 20" (51 cm)
L/XL 47–56.5" (120–144 cm) 21" (53 cm)
2XL/3XL 56.5–66" (144–168 cm) 22" (56 cm)

Note: Waist measurements indicate the width of the fabric at maximum stretch. Thanks to the drawstring, the braies gather and adapt even to a significantly slimmer waist.

Historical Insight: What Was Worn Under the Tunic?

In the Middle Ages, there were no briefs or boxer shorts. Men wore braies (Latin bracae), which were linen trousers of varying lengths and volumes. In the Early Middle Ages, they were rather narrow and long; in the High Middle Ages, they became shorter and wider. They often served as a support for separate hose (chausses), which were tied to the belt of the braies. Linen was the preferred material for anything touching the skin because it could withstand frequent and rough washing (boiling), unlike expensive wool.

Care Instructions

To ensure the braies retain their shape and properties, we recommend the following care:

  • Washing: Ideally, hand wash 100% linen or use a gentle cycle up to 30°C (86°F). The blend variant can be machine washed at 40°C (104°F).
  • Drying: Air dry flat. Avoid tumble drying, as it could damage the fibres and cause shrinking.
  • Ironing: Linen irons best while still slightly damp or using steam.

Warning

Although the braies are very comfortable, they are not primarily intended to be worn alone in public like modern shorts—the fabric can be slightly translucent (especially the 100% linen), and historically, this is underwear.
