Burnished Steel Shield Boss, House of Warfare Ø19 cm

Appearance and Construction

The shield boss features the classic domed shape with a flat rim, also known as the flange. Four holes, each with a diameter of approx. 6.35 mm, are pre-drilled into this flange for riveting to the shield board. The total outer diameter is approximately 190 mm, the inner diameter for the hand (measured from the back) is approx. 125 mm, and the overall height is roughly 80 mm. The dark, burnished surface gives the boss a realistic, historical appearance and partially protects it against corrosion. Its weight is approx. 560 g.

How to Use the Shield Boss

You will primarily use this boss as the central element when constructing your own shield for historical combat, reenactment, LARP, or as part of a costume. It protects the hand gripping the shield and simultaneously reinforces its centre. Using the included rivets and washers, you can easily attach it to a wooden or other shield board. Its robust construction from 2.3mm steel will provide your shield with the necessary durability.

The Shield Boss in History

Shield bosses were a crucial component of shields for many centuries, particularly during the Early and High Middle Ages, used for example by Vikings and Normans. Their primary function was to protect the warrior's hand, which gripped the central handle located directly behind the boss. At the same time, the metal boss deflected and neutralised enemy weapon strikes aimed at the shield's centre, which was often its most vulnerable point.

An Interesting Historical Fact

Did you know that the shape and size of shield bosses changed over the centuries? Early medieval bosses, like those on Viking round shields, were often larger and more prominently domed to provide ample space for a clenched fist. With the evolution of shield designs (e.g., kite or heater shields) and changes in grip styles, bosses could become smaller or change shape.

Product Care

Although burnishing provides some protection against corrosion, it is not completely rust-proof. After each use, especially in damp conditions or after contact with sweat, carefully clean the boss with a cloth, dry it thoroughly, and apply a thin layer of conservation oil or wax. This will prevent rust formation and keep the boss in good condition. Expect scratches and scuffs to appear on the surface with use – however, these are a natural part of usage and add to the product's authenticity and patina.
