Steel Shield Boss (Umbo), 2mm, Battle-Ready
Building a Functional Shield
This shield boss is designed for easy and secure mounting. Its flange comes with four pre-drilled 6mm holes. To attach it to a wooden shield board, you can use forged nails or round-headed rivets to enhance the historical character. Simply pass the shaft of the rivet or nail through the boss and the shield, and firmly peen it over a steel washer on the back. The boss is ideal for constructing Viking round shields, Norman kite shields, and even earlier types such as Celtic and Germanic shields.
The Heart of the Shield in History
The shield boss, or umbo, was the key component of shields for centuries. Its primary function was to protect the warrior's hand, which gripped a central handle directly behind it. The domed shape of the boss also effectively deflected sword strikes and weapon thrusts away from the shield's center and the warrior's body. However, the umbo was not just for passive defence. Experienced warriors also used it as an offensive weapon for a short-range punch, which could be used to strike an opponent in the face or to break through their shield wall.
A Fact from Archaeology
During the excavation of the famous Gokstad Viking ship in Norway in 1880, 32 round shields were discovered. All of them had an iron shield boss of a very similar type and construction to this one, proving the historical authenticity and widespread use of this design during the Viking Age.

Care and Maintenance for Steel
To ensure your shield boss lasts as long as possible and maintains its appearance, it requires proper care. As it is made of steel, it is susceptible to rust, especially if you use it in the rain or in damp environments.
- After each use, especially in wet conditions, wipe the boss thoroughly dry.
- To prevent rust, regularly treat it with a thin layer of oil. Gun oil, mineral oil, or even linseed oil will work perfectly.
- If any light surface rust appears, you can carefully remove it with fine steel wool and then re-oil the area to protect it.
- Never leave the shield boss sitting in water or stored in a damp place.
