Art Gladius Robust Chef's Knife (Gyuto Style) | 8-Inch 440 Steel Blade | Walnut Handle | Made in Spain

Appearance and Construction

This knife immediately impresses with its strong construction and elegant details. The blade, approximately 200 mm (around 8 inches) long, has a profile inspired by the Japanese Gyuto style – it's sufficiently wide, with a gently curved edge for rocking cuts, but features a straighter spine and a sharper downward curve to the tip than a classic Western chef's knife. It is crafted from 440 stainless steel. While the specification states a mirror polish finish, visually the blade features a striking hammered texture, giving it a unique character and potentially helping to reduce food sticking. The "GLADIUS" logo is located near the handle. The blade has an above-average thickness of approx. 2.6 mm, making it a very durable tool. The handle, made from dark walnut wood with a beautiful grain, has the proven shape, complemented by a metal bolster with red decorative rings, and is finished with a metal end cap. The knife's weight of approx. 210 g contributes to its solid and balanced feel in the hand. The total length is approximately 340 mm.

The Razor-Sharp 440 Steel Blade

A robust blade needs reliable steel. The 440 steel, hardened to 58−60 HRC, provides:

  • Excellent Sharpness: The knife arrives razor-sharp, ready for precise and easy cuts.
  • Long Edge Retention: The steel's hardness ensures the edge stays sharp even with intensive use.
  • Exceptional Strength: The 2.6 mm thickness gives the blade high durability and strength, even for more demanding tasks.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Proven stainless 440 steel is reliable and durable.
  • Good Sharpenability: The edge can be well maintained and sharpened.

The Walnut Wood Handle – Proven Classic with Detail

The walnut wood handle is not only beautiful but also practical:

  • Elegant Design: Dark wood, red rings, and metal elements form a harmonious whole.
  • Durability: Walnut wood is sufficiently hard and durable for kitchen use.
  • Comfortable Grip: The ergonomic shape ensures comfort and safety during work.
  • Natural Material: Pleasant to the touch and with a unique grain.

What is This Knife For?

Thanks to its shape and robustness, it's a great all-purpose chef's knife for:

  • Chopping herbs, slicing and dicing all kinds of vegetables (including harder types).
  • Portioning and slicing meat (boneless), poultry, and fish.
  • Crushing garlic.
  • All main kitchen tasks where you appreciate its strength, durability, and versatility.

Caring for Your Knife – Wood Requires Attention

Proper care is key to longevity:

  • Hand Washing is Essential: Definitely no dishwashers! It would ruin the blade and the walnut handle. Wash the knife only by hand with warm water and mild washing-up liquid, and dry it thoroughly immediately.
  • Oiling the Handle: To keep the walnut wood protected, treat it regularly. Occasionally rub it lightly with a thin layer of food-safe mineral oil or wood oil.
  • Safe Storage: In a knife block or on a magnetic rack.
  • Edge Maintenance (Plain Edge): Use a honing steel regularly. You can sharpen on a stone (the robust blade can take a bit more pressure) or use a professional service. Sharpening angle approx. 15−20 degrees.

Safety First

When working with a sharp and robust knife:

  • Use a stable cutting board.
  • Cut away from your body, watching your finger placement.
  • Stay focused.
  • Never try to catch a falling knife.
  • Store the knife safely.

This robust Art Gladius chef's knife with a walnut wood handle is ideal for those seeking a high-performance, durable, yet elegant main knife for the kitchen. It's ready to handle the daily rigours of cooking and will be your reliable partner for years to come. Quality made in Spain.
