Art Gladius Robust Chef's Knife | 8-Inch 440 Steel Blade | Sandalwood Handle | Made in Spain

Appearance and Construction

The knife features the classic chef's knife profile – a triangular blade, approximately 205 mm (around 8 inches) long, that tapers smoothly to a sharp point. The gently curved edge allows for a comfortable rocking motion during cutting. The blade is crafted from 440 stainless steel. As with other knives in this series, the manufacturer specifies a mirror polish finish; however, the blade immediately catches the eye with its striking hammered texture, lending it a unique appearance and potentially helping to reduce food adhesion. The "GLADIUS" logo is placed near the handle. This knife is characterised by its truly massive construction – the blade thickness is approx. 2.7 mm and it weighs 227 g. This makes it a very durable tool. The reddish sandalwood handle with its ergonomic curve, metal bolster, and decorative accent rings provides a secure grip for full control over the knife. The total length of the knife is approx. 332 mm.

The Razor-Sharp 440 Steel Blade

The massive blade is made from proven 440 stainless steel, hardened to 58−60 HRC. Thanks to this, you get:

  • Great Sharpness: The knife arrives razor-sharp, ready for any kitchen task.
  • Long-Lasting Edge: The steel's hardness ensures the edge stays sharp for a long time.
  • Extraordinary Durability: The 2.7 mm thickness makes the blade extremely strong and resilient, even during more demanding use or when cutting tougher ingredients.
  • Corrosion Resistance: 440 steel is reliable and resists common kitchen elements well.
  • Good Sharpenability: Despite its robustness, the knife can be effectively sharpened and maintained.

The Sandalwood Handle – Comfort for a Powerful Tool

The sandalwood handle ensures comfort even when working with this more powerful knife:

  • Firm and Secure Grip: The ergonomic shape allows for full control over the more substantial blade.
  • Attractive Appearance: The reddish colour and grain of the wood are pleasing to the eye.
  • Durability: Sandalwood is hard and durable.
  • Pleasant Feel: The natural material is comfortable in the hand.

What is This Knife For?

As a robust chef's knife, it's extremely versatile, but its strength particularly shines when:

  • Chopping and slicing all kinds of vegetables (including harder types like squash or celeriac).
  • Portioning larger cuts of meat (boneless).
  • Cutting large blocks of cheese.
  • Crushing garlic with the flat side of the blade.
  • General-purpose use for most kitchen tasks where you appreciate its weight and durability. Compared to lighter knives, it might be less nimble for very fine work but excels through its power.

Caring for Your Knife – Maintaining Strength and Sharpness

Even a robust knife needs proper care:

  • Strictly Hand Wash: Do not put in the dishwasher! It would damage the steel and the wooden handle. Wash by hand with warm water and mild washing-up liquid, then dry thoroughly immediately.
  • Safe Storage: Not in a drawer with other utensils. It belongs in a quality knife block or on a strong magnetic rack.
  • Edge Maintenance: Use a honing steel regularly. When sharpening on a stone, be aware that due to the blade's thickness, it may require more time and effort. You can also use a professional sharpening service. The recommended angle is 15−20 degrees.
  • Handle Care: Protect the wood from prolonged exposure to water. Occasional treatment with a food-safe mineral oil will keep the wood in good condition.

Safety First

You are working with a heavy, massive, and very sharp knife:

  • Use a solid and stable cutting board.
  • Always cut with full control and concentration, moving away from your body.
  • Keep your fingers at a safe distance.
  • Never try to catch a falling knife.
  • Store the knife safely.

If you're looking for a chef's knife that won't shy away from any challenge and can withstand more demanding use, this robust Art Gladius model with a sandalwood handle is an excellent choice. It's a strong, reliable, and yet elegant tool that will serve you for many years. Honest quality, made in Spain.
