Woollen Leg Wraps (Winingas), 368cm, Pair with Fibulas

Detailed Description

An Authentic Accessory for Your Kit

Whether you're a seasoned warrior preparing for battle or a merchant at a medieval fair, leg wraps are the detail that separates a great costume from an average one. They were an indispensable part of clothing for centuries, and for good reason. Our replicas from House of Warfare are made from a woollen fabric that is pleasant to the touch yet robust enough to withstand the rigours of the field. They are available in several classic colours (Black, Brown, Green, Grey, Red) that you can easily match with the rest of your attire.

How to Correctly Use Leg Wraps (Winingas)

Applying them is simple but takes a little practice. Follow these steps for the best result:

  1. Start at the ankle. Some prefer to begin by wrapping over the instep to better secure the shoe, while others start directly above the ankle.
  2. Wrap the fabric spirally up the calf. Each new wrap should overlap the previous one by about one-third to one-half of its width.
  3. Ensure even tension – not so loose that they slip, but not so tight as to restrict blood circulation.
  4. Continue wrapping up to just below the knee.
  5. Secure the end of the wrap. Historically, small brooches (fibulas) were used, which are included in this package, or the end was simply tucked under the last wrap. The fibula adds maximum authenticity to your look.

A Glimpse into History: More Than Just Fashion

Winingas (Old English) or puttees (a later term) were not just an aesthetic accessory. In an age when trousers (braies) were often loose, leg wraps prevented them from snagging on branches in the woods and protected the fabric from mud and wear. They also provided crucial support for the calf muscles on long marches and, not least, insulated against cold and damp. They were worn not only by Vikings and Saxons but also, in various forms, by Romans, Byzantines, and soldiers right up until the First World War.

Caring for Your Woollen Wraps

Wool is a fantastic material with natural self-cleaning and antibacterial properties, so the wraps don't need to be washed after every use. Often, just airing them out and letting them dry is enough.

  • Washing: Strictly hand wash in cold or lukewarm water (max 30°C / 86°F).
  • Detergent: Use a special wool detergent (ideally with lanolin).
  • Drying: Never wring them out by twisting! Gently squeeze out the water. Dry them laid flat on a towel, away from direct sunlight or heaters.
  • What to Avoid: Never put them in a washing machine or tumble dryer! Hot water, mechanical friction, and hot air will cause them to shrink and felt irreparably. Do not iron them at a high temperature.
