Long Sleeve Chainmail Hauberk "Elite" | 8mm Flat Rings, Wedge Riveted, Alternating Solid Rings

Authentic Protection for the Discerning Reenactor

This hauberk represents the pinnacle of mass-produced maille armour. Its main feature is the weave construction. It uses flat rings connected by wedge rivets. This type of riveting was highly prized in the Middle Ages for its strength and is sought after today for its authentic appearance. The rows of riveted rings alternate with rows of solid rings (punched from sheet metal), a technique that is historically documented and very efficient.

Unlike cheaper "tubular" cuts, this shirt is tailored. It is designed to fit an average to muscular build. Tapered sleeves and a fitted cut under the armpits ensure the armour doesn't hang loosely and you aren't carrying unnecessary extra weight in iron. You will especially appreciate this during all-day wear at events.

Historical Context and Usage

Chainmail shirts of this type were the dominant form of protection in Europe from the early Middle Ages until the advent of plate armour in the 14th century, and remained an important supplement even after. The technology of alternating riveted and solid rings saved blacksmiths time in the Middle Ages – half the rings didn't need riveting; they could simply be punched out. Wedge riveting is typical of the High Middle Ages and provides the joint with higher resistance to bursting than round-head rivets.

This armour is suitable for:

  • Living History and Reenactment: Due to the high level of authenticity (wedge rivets, alternating rows).
  • LARP: If you play a character requiring a realistic appearance and are willing to wear the real weight of armour.
  • Costume Purposes: For theatre or film where detail is required.

Note: Although the construction is very strong, this is a mild steel product. For full-contact combat sports like Buhurt or Battle of the Nations, we recommend riveted maille made from tempered spring steel, which is lighter and more resistant to deformation under extreme impacts.

Care and Maintenance

Since the shirt is made of mild steel without a stainless finish, it requires regular maintenance to prevent rust:

  1. Storage: Keep the armour dry. Never leave it in a damp bag or sack for long periods after an event.
  2. Cleaning and Oiling: Check the armour after every use. If it is damp from sweat or rain, dry it thoroughly. Treat it regularly with preserving oil (e.g., WD-40, gun oil, or simply a rag with mineral oil).
  3. Rust Removal: If surface rust appears, you can remove it mechanically (e.g., by rubbing the armour in a sack with sand or using a fine wire brush) and then re-oil it.

Tip for you: To ensure the armour fits perfectly and the weight is distributed to your hips (saving your shoulders from strain), don't forget to cinch it at the waist with a sturdy leather belt. Always wear a gambeson underneath to cushion impacts and prevent chafing.
