Roman Lorica Segmentata, Corbridge A Type, 20 Gauge Steel Armour

Symbol of Roman Military Might

The Lorica Segmentata became the hallmark armour of the Imperial Roman legionary during the early Empire (primarily 1st-3rd centuries AD). This type of plate armour gradually replaced the older chainmail (Lorica Hamata) as it offered superior protection against slashing and piercing attacks, all while maintaining mobility thanks to its segmented construction. The Corbridge A type is one of the best-documented and most recognisable variants of this armour.

Construction and Design

This replica faithfully mimics the construction principles of the original. The torso is protected by steel bands connected by internal leather straps. The shoulder guards consist of larger, articulated plates that allow for free movement of the arms.

  • Material: The body of the armour is made from 20-gauge mild steel (approx. 0.91 mm).
  • Fittings: All hinges, buckles, rivets, and decorative rosettes are made from polished brass, creating an authentic and visually striking contrast.
  • Fastenings: The armour consists of two halves (front and back) which attach with leather straps and buckles at the shoulders and sides (under the arms). The front and back torso sections are also laced together using leather cords threaded through brass eyelets.

Use and Inspiration

This Roman plate armour is an ideal choice for:

  • Re-enactment: A faithful portrayal of a 1st-century Roman legionary.
  • LARP and Cosplay: The perfect base for a Roman soldier, gladiator, or an antique-inspired fantasy warrior.
  • Living History: An excellent demonstration of Roman military technology.
  • Display: An impressive centrepiece for collectors and history enthusiasts.

Care for Your New Armour

To ensure your Lorica Segmentata serves you well for a long time and remains in perfect condition, give it the proper care:

  • Rust Prevention: After each use, especially in damp conditions, dry the armour thoroughly. Regularly treat the steel parts with a thin layer of conservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or another mineral oil) to prevent rust.
  • Leather Parts: Condition the leather straps and laces with leather care products to keep them supple and prevent cracking.
  • Storage: Store the armour in a dry, ventilated place. It is ideal to hang it on a stand to maintain its shape and prevent the plates from warping.
  • Cleaning: The brass fittings can be polished with a soft cloth and a suitable brass cleaner to maintain their shine.
