Leather Lorica Segmentata Carnuntum for LARP and Theater
Historical Context and Pop-Culture Origins
The design of this armor is inspired by the famous Roman segmented plate body armor used during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. From an archaeological perspective, historical Roman soldiers never wore all-leather segmentata armor in battle. This piece is a modern pop-culture replica inspired by 20th-century Hollywood cinema and theater productions. In film (from classic peplum movies to modern blockbusters like Gladiator), all-leather armor is widely favored by prop designers and stunt performers for its lower weight, ease of movement, and striking appearance on camera.
Authentic historical legionaries wore armor constructed from overlapping iron strips connected by internal leather straps and brass fittings. Leather was, however, vital to their gear. Underneath metal armor, soldiers wore a padded or leather vest known as a subarmalis (or thoracomachus) to absorb shocks and prevent painful chafing. Another iconic element was the pteruges—decorative leather or fabric strips protecting the shoulders and thighs.
Design and Practical Application
This lightweight interpretation of Roman body armor is constructed from durable leather approximately 3 mm (1/8 in) thick. The torso features horizontal overlapping lames, while each shoulder is protected by four contoured leather plates, ensuring full articulation of the arms. The armor is easy to put on and adjust using both front and rear lacing with an 8 mm (5/16 in) wide leather cord. The lacing passes through sturdy metal loops riveted directly onto the leather bands. For added comfort, the neck opening is bound with a softer leather lining to prevent skin irritation during active movement.
Significance of the Name Carnuntum
This armor is named Carnuntum in honor of one of the most prominent Roman legionary fortresses and cities along the Danube border (Limes Romanus), located in present-day Austria. Carnuntum served as a major military stronghold and home to elite Roman legions defending the empire's northern frontier.

Care and Safety
To keep the leather soft and maintain its appearance over time, treat it regularly with a quality leather balm or conditioner. Avoid long exposure to moisture and rain. If the armor gets wet, allow it to air dry slowly at room temperature—never expose it to direct heat sources or harsh sunlight.
Important Safety Warning: Please note that this is not protective armor suitable for full-contact combat sports (such as Buhurt, SCA heavy combat, or Battle of the Nations). It is designed exclusively for LARP, theater, film, cosplay, and stage fighting. For optimal comfort and garment protection, we recommend wearing a padded subarmalis vest or cotton tunic underneath.
