Blackened Chainmail Haubergeon, 10mm Butted Rings
Simplicity and Functionality
This haubergeon (a shorter version of the hauberk, reaching to mid-thigh) is made of mild steel. The rings have an inner diameter of 10 mm and are butted (not riveted). This manufacturing technique allows us to offer the armour at a very attractive price. The surface of the rings is chemically blackened, which not only looks stylish but also significantly reduces maintenance requirements – unlike bright steel, not every trace of rust is immediately visible here.
The shirt features a classic "T" cut with short sleeves. It has no integrated padding or hems, giving you absolute freedom in choosing your undergarments. You can wear a thin tunic underneath for a light look, or a thick gambeson for maximum comfort and bulk.
Important Notice: What's Included?
Attention: The delivery includes only the chainmail shirt itself. All other items seen in the photos (the gambeson showing underneath the armour, leather belt, sword, model's clothing) are illustrative props only and are not part of the product. We strongly recommend purchasing a gambeson separately – it is essential under chainmail for your comfort and protection against chafing.
Historical Insight: Why Black Armour?
In the Middle Ages and early modern period, shiny "silver" armour was not the only standard. Soldiers, especially those who could not afford servants to polish their armour, or those who needed to remain inconspicuous, often blackened their gear. This was done by burning oils into the metal or through controlled oxidation. Black armour does not reflect sunlight (a tactical advantage in ambushes) and better withstands the moisture of military campaigns.
Usage Warnings
- Suitable for: LARP, Cosplay, Theatre, Film, Costume events.
- Not suitable for: Full-contact combat (Buhurt, HMB), historical fencing with steel weapons. The butted rings may spread open under heavy blows from steel weapons.
Care Instructions
To ensure your armour lasts as long as possible looking like new, please follow these rules:
- Storage: Never store the mail when wet. Let it dry thoroughly in a ventilated place after every use.
- Preservation: Even though the armour is blackened, it can still rust. Treat it regularly with gun oil (e.g., WD-40). Simply spray on and wipe with a cloth.
- Handling: Be careful when putting on and taking off the armour to avoid tearing rings by pulling. If a ring spreads open, you can easily close it back up with pliers.
