Battle-Ready Germanic Shield Boss | 14 Gauge Forged Steel Umbo
Build Your Own Combat Shield
This boss is the key component for building your own functional shield, ideal for Germanic, Viking, or other early medieval round shield designs. Installation is straightforward:
- Cut a hole of approximately 12.5 cm (4.9″) in the center of your shield board.
- Place the shield boss over the hole, ensuring it is completely covered.
- Secure it firmly through the four pre-drilled 6 mm holes.
For maximum authenticity, we recommend using forged nails or rivets, clenching the ends over on the back of the shield. Alternatively, modern rivets with a round head can also be used.
The Heart and Fist of the Shield
Historically, the shield boss served a dual purpose. Its primary role, of course, was to protect the warrior's hand, which gripped a central bar directly behind it. The conical shape effectively deflected slashes and thrusts from swords and spears. However, the umbo also served as a secondary weapon. The pointed tip allowed a warrior to use the shield for an active punch or shove in close-quarters combat, turning the shield into a dangerous tool for both defense and offense.

Maintenance and Care
As a steel product designed for combat, this shield boss requires basic maintenance. To prevent rust, keep it dry. After each use, especially in damp weather or if the surface gets scratched, wipe it down carefully and apply a thin coat of oil (such as mineral oil, gun oil, or WD-40). This will prevent corrosion and keep your gear in perfect condition for the next battle.
