Blackened Chainmail Hauberk – Flat Riveted & Solid Rings, 9 mm
Construction You Can Rely On
This armour is not just a decoration. It is made of mild steel and utilizes a historically accurate and very durable technique of alternating rows:
- Flat Riveted Rings: One row consists of flat rings joined with round rivets. Riveting prevents the rings from splitting open under impact or tension.
- Flat Solid (Punched) Rings: The second row consists of solid, seamless rings punched from sheet metal. These rings act as the "backbone" of the armour and significantly increase its overall strength.
The inner diameter of the rings is 9 mm and the wire thickness corresponds to 17 gauge (approx. 1.15 mm). Flat rings have the advantage of lying flatter against the body and providing denser protection than round wire rings.
When and How to Wear a Hauberk
The Hauberk type (a long shirt with sleeves and knee-length cut) was the mainstay of protection for heavy infantry and knights throughout most of the Middle Ages. Due to the blackening, this variant is also perfectly suited for fantasy costumes (orcs, dark elves, rangers). To ensure the armour serves you well:
- Always wear a gambeson: Chainmail protects against cuts but not against the blunt force of an impact. A gambeson absorbs shocks and prevents bruising.
- Use a belt: A hauberk has significant weight. A sturdy belt will help you distribute the weight from your shoulders to your hips, which you will appreciate after several hours of wear.
Size Chart
The measurements below include both Metric (cm) and Imperial (inches). "Fits Chest Size" refers to the wearer's body measurement including the gambeson. "Chest (Actual)" is the measurement of the armour itself – it must be larger than your chest size to allow for movement.

Maintenance of Blackened Armour
Blackening is a chemical surface treatment that protects steel from corrosion better than bare metal, but it is not invincible. Check the armour after every use. If it is damp, let it dry in a well-ventilated area. For long-term storage, we recommend lightly oiling the armour (e.g., with WD-40 or gun oil) and storing it in a dry place. Avoid using wire brushes to prevent scrubbing off the black layer.

To make your costume complete and comfortable, I recommend getting a high-quality gambeson to wear under this armour (e.g., in a natural colour, which contrasts beautifully with the black mail).
