Historical Design and Usage
Historically, the combination of a sallet and a bevor was favored by men-at-arms for its modularity. Unlike a great helm, this setup allowed the knight to adapt to the situation. This specific gorget with chin guard features a spring-loaded push-pin mechanism on the right side. By pressing the pin, the upper lamella can be folded down instantly. The upper edge is adorned with diamond and heart-shaped cutouts, which serve both a decorative purpose and act as breathing holes (ventails).
The construction involves two halves permanently riveted on the left shoulder, while the right side closes securely with a keyhole-slot mechanism. Additionally, two leather straps are riveted to the sides, specifically designed for attaching (pointing) your pauldrons or shoulder armour, ensuring your harness stays integrated during movement.
Safety Warning: While made from sturdy 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel, this item is a replica intended for reenactment, stage combat, and costuming. It is not suitable for full-contact heavy combat such as Buhurt, HMB, or Battle of the Nations, as the mechanism and material may not withstand the extreme impact forces involved in such sports.
Care and Maintenance
To ensure your armour lasts a lifetime and maintains its appearance, proper care is essential:
- Prevent Rust: Carbon steel is prone to rust. Never store your armour wet or in a damp environment.
- Cleaning: After every use, wipe the metal clean and dry. Apply a protective oil coating (such as WD40, Ballistol, or a mineral oil) to seal the surface against moisture.
- Initial Preparation: The product is shipped with a heavy layer of grease to prevent corrosion during transit. Wipe this off with paper towels or a cloth before wearing. A degreaser spray can help with removal.
- Interior: The inside is painted black to provide extra resistance against rust caused by perspiration.
