Chainmail Haubergeon – Round Riveted Rings 8mm, 18 Gauge

Durability and History Combined

This armor is made using the traditional 4-in-1 weave method, where each ring is linked to four neighbors. The key feature here is the use of round rings secured with round rivets (dome rivets). This construction is historically accurate and offers an excellent price-to-performance ratio.

The Haubergeon, unlike the long Hauberk, reaches approximately to the mid-thigh and features half-length sleeves. During the 12th and 13th centuries, this variant was favored by many warriors for its lighter weight and lesser restriction of movement, which was crucial during long campaigns or for foot soldiers. The armor is supplied in a natural finish (no galvanization), giving it a raw, realistic look, but it requires regular oil maintenance.

Practical Tips for Use

  • Always wear padding: You must wear a padded jacket (gambeson) under the chainmail. The rings themselves mitigate slashing wounds but will not prevent fractures from crushing blows. The gambeson absorbs the impact energy and prevents the rings from pinching your skin or ruining your tunic.
  • Secure with a belt: The weight of the armor hangs entirely on your shoulders. If you fasten a sturdy leather belt around your waist and pull the armor slightly up over it, you transfer some of the weight to your hips. Your wearing experience will be much more comfortable.
  • Adjustment: If the sleeves are too long or tight, chainmail is relatively easy to adjust by removing or adding rows of rings (requires chainmail pliers).

Care and Maintenance

Since the armor is made of Mild Steel, it is prone to rust. Here is how to keep it in shape:

  • Storage: Never store the armor wet. If you get wet or sweaty, you must dry it as soon as possible (e.g., in the sun or near a heat source).
  • Oiling: Keep the armor lightly oiled at all times. Use technical oil (e.g., WD-40) or gun oil. Before an event, you can wipe off excess oil with a rag to avoid staining your costume.
  • Rust Removal: If surface rust appears, remove it mechanically – for example, by "tumbling" the armor in a barrel with sand or using a wire brush, followed by re-oiling.
