Crimson Base for Knightly Attire: Separate Cotton Hose, 12th – 14th C.

Practical Use and Wearing Instructions

These hose consist of two separate legs, a construction typical for the 12th to 14th centuries. They are not worn like modern trousers; instead, they are attached using points or laces (not included) to the belt of your linen undergarments (braies). If you have a smaller frame, you can easily fold the extra length of the foot into your shoes. Taller men can cut the tips and finish the foot as needed. This variability ensures a good fit regardless of your exact leg length. They are designed to provide maximum freedom of movement for fencing and camp life activities.

Historical Context and Fascinating Facts

In the Middle Ages, trousers in the modern sense did not exist. Instead, men wore these separate hose, which became increasingly tapered and elegant over time. During the Crusades and the golden age of chivalry, hose in contrasting colors were a major fashion trend. As a historian, I can confirm that while cotton was more expensive than linen, it began to appear more frequently in European fashion due to trade with the Mediterranean. These hose were also critically important as a padding layer under chainmail chausses, preventing the metal rings from chafing against the skin and absorbing impact.

Care Instructions and Safety

Cotton requires gentle care to maintain its color and shape. Always turn the hose inside out before washing. We strongly recommend hand washing only in cold water (max. 30°C / 86°F) with a very small amount of mild detergent. Air dry the hose; never use a tumble dryer as they may shrink. When lacing them to your braies, ensure they are secure but not so tight that they restrict blood circulation. Please note: Other items shown in the photos, such as the tunic, footwear, or laces, are not included in the delivery. We recommend pairing these hose with our medieval laces with brass aglets and a pair of linen braies to form a complete historical set.
