Medieval High Riding Boots with Buckles – 14th & 15th Century

Comfort and Protection for Rider and Foot Soldier

These impressive boots are made from high-quality, sturdy yet supple cowhide. Their cut is designed to protect the rider's leg from saddle chafing and the horse's flanks, as well as from inclement weather or whipping branches in rough terrain.

A key feature is the system of four adjustable straps with brass buckles on the outer side of the calf. Thanks to these, you can adjust the boot precisely to your calf circumference, preventing the soft leather from slouching uncomfortably. The top cuff can be worn pulled high up the thigh (cuissardes style) for maximum protection or folded down for a more relaxed look.

Historical Context: The Luxury of Gaston Phoebus

High boots of this type were not for the common folk in the Middle Ages. Leather was expensive, and the material consumption for such a high boot is significant. Similar models can be seen in late 14th-century iconography, but their popularity surged during the 15th century. A beautiful example of such depiction is found in the famous Book of the Hunt (Livre de chasse) by Gaston Phoebus, Count of Foix, where similar boots are captured on the legs of hunters and noblemen.

Important Note Regarding the Sole

The boots are equipped with an authentic leather sole. This is excellent for historical accuracy and movement on grass or soil, but the boots can be slippery on modern surfaces (pavement, asphalt, tiles). If you plan to wear the boots often in the city or on concrete, we strongly recommend having a cobbler add a thin rubber sole. This will extend the life of the sole and increase your safety.

Care for Your New Boots

To ensure the leather serves you for years, it requires care:

  • Clean mud from the boots with a damp cloth (not soaking wet) after every wear.
  • Always dry them slowly at room temperature. Never place them directly near a heater or fire – the leather would harden and crack.
  • Regularly use high-quality leather grease or balm with beeswax. The leather will remain soft, water-resistant, and retain its colour.
