Early Medieval Leather Ankle Boots with Side Lacing

A Step into History

Ankle boots with side lacing and no hard heel represent one of the most typical types of footwear for the early medieval period (c. 8th-11th centuries). Similar boots were worn by Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Franks, and Slavs. Archaeological finds of such footwear come from important sites like Haithabu (Hedeby) in Germany and York (Jorvik) in England. Their simple yet functional design was proven over centuries in demanding conditions and is ideal for completing your historical costume.

Construction, Material, and Practical Advice

The boots are made from genuine cowhide leather, including an authentic leather sole. This makes them very comfortable when walking on natural surfaces like grass, dirt, or forest paths. However, please be aware that leather soles can be slippery on modern wet surfaces like asphalt or paving stones. For maximum comfort and historical accuracy, we recommend wearing the boots with thick woollen socks or footwraps. Wool is an excellent insulator and wicks away sweat, which was crucial in the past. If you are between two sizes, we suggest choosing the larger one to allow enough room for thick socks.

Before using them in the field for the first time, especially in damp conditions, we recommend thoroughly waterproofing the boots with beeswax or a quality leather grease/dubbin. Pay special attention to the seams.

Care for Leather Footwear

To ensure your boots last as long as possible, regular care is essential. Clean off any heavy dirt after each use. If they are wet, stuff them with newspaper and allow them to dry naturally at room temperature – never dry them near a direct heat source (radiator, fire). Once dry, treat them with a quality leather cream, grease, or wax to keep the leather supple and water-resistant.
