Sharp Samurai Tanto Dagger Forged from Carbon Steel

Traditional Construction and Rich Decoration

The dagger is fitted with a hand-forged blade made of 1045 carbon steel, crafted in the classic Shinogi-Zukuri style without a fuller (Bo-Hi). Its authentic appearance is enhanced by a real temper line (hamon). The weapon can be completely dismantled as the handle is secured to the blade with traditional pegs. No plastics were used in its manufacture. Beneath the deep blue cotton handle wrap, tied in the classic Hineri Maki style, lies a base of genuine rayskin. The blade collar (habaki) and washers (seppa) are precisely crafted from brass. All decorative elements, namely the guard (tsuba), collar (fuchi), ornaments under the wrap (menuki), and pommel (kashira), are cast from metal. The whole piece is complemented by a wooden scabbard coated in high-gloss black lacquer in the Kuroro style.

Historical Context and Purpose of the Weapon

In the history of feudal Japan, the tanto served as a samurai's backup weapon. It was traditionally worn tucked behind the belt (obi) and was primarily intended for close-quarters combat, for tight spaces where a long sword was useless, or for piercing gaps in an opponent's armour. The tanto also held deep ritual significance, as this exact type of blade was often used for the ritual suicide known as seppuku (or harakiri), by which a samurai preserved his honour.

Safety and Proper Maintenance

The blade of this dagger is sharply honed and fully functional. It can be used for light cutting practice (tameshigiri), but we must warn you that, for safety reasons, it is not intended for contact fencing, man-to-man combat training, or stage duelling. Handle the weapon with the utmost caution and entirely at your own risk to prevent fatal injuries.

Samurai swords warranty

Since the blade is forged from carbon steel, it requires regular maintenance. Never touch the edge with bare hands; sweat causes rapid corrosion. After each handling, clean the blade and treat it with a thin layer of clove oil. With this weapon, we recommend purchasing a traditional cleaning kit for Japanese swords and a wooden stand for a dignified and safe display in your home.
