Silver Gleam of the Valiant Knight: 10mm Riveted Aluminium Chainmail Haubergeon
Practical Use and Wearing
This haubergeon is put on like a classic shirt over the head. To ensure the armour fits perfectly and doesn't pinch, we always recommend wearing it over a padded gambeson. Padding under the armour not only increases your comfort but also gives your silhouette a historically correct, robust profile. The mid-length sleeves allow you to combine the mail with leather bracers or plate gauntlets without the material restricting your wrists. It is an excellent choice for archers, light infantry, or knights who prefer mobility over brute weight.

Chainmail Through the Centuries
Mail armour accompanied European warriors for over two millennia. From Celtic blacksmiths who likely invented this protection, through Roman legionaries, to the High Middle Ages, it was a symbol of status and security. This specific cut – the haubergeon – became popular in the 14th century when long hauberks were shortened for better agility. Interestingly, producing one such shirt in the Middle Ages took hundreds of hours of manual labour. Today, you can own this iconic look without the need to drag ten kilograms of iron across the battlefield.
Maintenance and Care
One of the biggest advantages of aluminium is its resistance to corrosion. Unlike steel mail, you do not need to constantly oil this armour. If the shirt gets dirty after an event, simply rinse it gently in lukewarm soapy water and let it air dry. It is best stored laid flat or on a very wide coat hanger to prevent point-loading the rings on the shoulders. Avoid contact with aggressive chemicals that could cause the metal surface to oxidise.
Safety Warning
Please keep in mind that this is a costume prop designed for aesthetic and theatrical use. Aluminium is a very soft metal and lacks the mechanical resistance of steel. Never use this armour for contact fencing (HEMA, Buhurt, battles with steel weapons). There is a risk of the rings failing or being cut through upon impact, which can lead to serious injury. This product is not intended as protective equipment for combat.
We recommend pairing this mail shirt with one of our textile gambesons and a leather belt to properly distribute the weight onto your hips.
